One of Lebanon's oldest villages, Smar Jbeil is crowned by a ruined castle first raised by the Phoenicians and rebuilt by the Crusaders as a stronghold of the County of Tripoli. Explore its rock-cut ditch, wells and underground passages, where the first Maronite patriarch once took refuge. From the ramparts the view stretches along the coast from Jbeil to Tripoli.
