Al-Bass Archaeological Site & Roman Hippodrome
About
This sprawling UNESCO site preserves a 2nd-century hippodrome measuring roughly 480 by 160 metres that once seated around 30,000 spectators for chariot races. A 170-metre colonnaded Roman road, a monumental triumphal arch and a vast necropolis of carved sarcophagi line the ancient route into Tyre. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as shade is scarce and signage is minimal.
