About
Founded in 1157 as a Cistercian abbey during the Crusades and revived by Greek Orthodox monks in 1610, Our Lady of Balamand sits on a plateau above the Mediterranean near Amioun. Its medieval church, vaulted courtyards and icons make it one of the North's most important spiritual sites, and it shares its grounds with the modern University of Balamand. The peaceful terraces offer sweeping views over the Koura olive plain and the sea.
