About
Overlooking the sea near the old port, the Great Omari Mosque was created in 1291 when the Mamluks converted a Crusader-era Church of St John into Sidon's principal mosque. Sturdy Crusader buttresses and Romanesque-Gothic stonework still frame the building, topped by a 19th-century Ottoman minaret. Carefully restored after 1980s war damage, it remains the city's oldest and most venerable place of worship.
