About

Wrapped in pine and oak between 600 and 1,100 metres up, Baabdat is an old Matn village whose name comes from the Aramaic for 'home of adoration.' Its lanes link a remarkable set of old churches — among them 16th-century Saint Mamas, Saint Georges (1660) and Saints Sarkis and Bakhos — built by families who once cut timber for Beirut's shipyards. Cool summers and forest walks make it a quiet retreat from the coast.
