Souk el Gharb, whose name means 'Western Market', sits on a pine-wooded ridge just above Aley, with commanding views down over Beirut and the Mediterranean's Saint George Bay. Once a prosperous summer resort of Ottoman-era stone houses and grand villas favoured by Gulf families, it is now a quiet, breezy hill town made for a scenic drive, a walk among the pines and a sunset panorama. Roman and Ottoman traces around the town hint at centuries of settlement.
