Where the Dog River meets the sea just north of Beirut, successive armies carved commemorative stelae into the rock at this strategic pass over more than three millennia. Twenty-two inscriptions in seven languages survive, from Egyptian pharaohs and Assyrian and Babylonian kings to Roman, Arabic, French and British memorials, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register. It is a compact open-air history lesson spanning the whole story of Lebanon.
