Saint George Maronite Cathedral
About
Built between 1884 and 1894 in a Tuscan-Renaissance style, this is the seat of the Maronite archeparchy of Beirut. Damaged in the civil war and again by the 2020 port blast, its restored nave glows with gilded altars and icons, and a 72-metre bell tower rises to match the neighbouring mosque's minarets. Just steps away, the Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral hides an archaeological crypt museum layered with Roman and Byzantine remains.
