About

Perched on a hill in Beit Mery, Deir el Qalaa pairs the columns of a 2nd-century Roman temple once dedicated to Baal Marqod with the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a Maronite monastery raised over the ruins around 1750. Smaller temples, mosaics and public Roman baths lie scattered across the site, which opens onto a sweeping view of the coast. It ranks among the largest Roman temples in Lebanon after Baalbek and Niha.
