About

Half-carved into the cliff of Wadi Qannoubine, this ancient monastery served as the seat of the Maronite Patriarchate from about 1440 to the 19th century and lies within the UNESCO-listed Qadisha (Holy) Valley. Its rock-hewn church keeps 18th-century frescoes, while nearby caves shelter the tombs of patriarchs and the hermitage of Saint Marina. It is reached on foot by a steep path down from Diman or Blaouza, a walk as moving as the shrine itself.
