About

Carved into a sheer cliff overlooking the Bisri and Aaray valley, this fortress — known in old sources as Shqif Tayron or the Cave of Tyron — was first recorded around 975 AD and changed hands between Crusaders and Muslim rulers for centuries. Its rock-cut chambers stored provisions and sheltered soldiers, fed by a rainwater system and a nearby spring, and local lore ties it to the Maan emirs. Reached by a steep footpath from Niha village inside the Shouf Cedar Reserve, it is one of the area's most striking hidden gems.
