Rachaya Citadel (Citadel of Independence)
Rachaya el-Wadi, Zahle & the Bekaa·4.6(350)·$$$$
About
Rising above the stone town of Rachaya el-Wadi on the slopes of Mount Hermon, this Shihab-era palace-fort is where French authorities jailed Lebanon's founding leaders in November 1943, an act that hastened independence. Still held by the Lebanese Army, it can be visited with a soldier-guide who leads you through the vaulted cells and a small museum. The mountain setting and old souk below make it a rewarding half-day.
