About

Standing beside the road near Hanaouay, about 6 km south-east of Tyre, this striking monument is a huge limestone sarcophagus set on a stepped stone pedestal, rising some seven metres in all. Local tradition names it for Hiram I, the biblical king of Tyre, though archaeologists date the tomb to the Persian period several centuries later. It is an easy, free roadside stop to combine with a visit to nearby Qana.
