Temple of Eshmun (Bustan el-Sheikh)

Two kilometres northeast of Sidon, this sanctuary to Eshmun, the Phoenician god of healing, is widely called the best-preserved Phoenician site in Lebanon. Begun in the 6th century BC, it centres on a monumental podium with the exquisite marble Throne of Astarte and a carved children's frieze, fed by sacred water channels. Set in the green Bustan el-Sheikh grove by the Awali river, it is a serene, uncrowded window onto ancient Sidon.
